Richard N. Gillis was born on Nov. 8, 1927, the son of the late Luther and Fannie Gillis. He departed this life on Sept. 9, 2013 in Lawrenceville.
He attended J.A. Green School in Brunswick County.
Richard joined Poplar Mount Baptist Church in Lawrenceville at an early age. He served his country in the U.S. Army for eight years in the Korean War. He also worked as a bus driver for the Brunswick County Public School System. He worked for many years at the Virginia Dye Plant until he retired.
He married Rose Marie Gillus in 1955 and to this union nine children were born.
Richard leaves to cherish his children, Richard E. Gillis, Shelton Gillis, Ronnie Gillis, Annette M. Gillis, Jeanette Gillis, Leanette Williams, Anthony Gillis, Orlanzo Gillis, and step son Alvin Gillis; 38 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; one sister, Lucy Claiborne; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Sept. 14, 2013 from Poplar Mount Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, with interment in the church cemetery. Brown’s Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
